Aranjuez, 10 min. away from the site, is located at the confluence at the Tajo and Jarama rivers. It is one of the Royal Estates of the Spanish Crown since the times of Philip II of Spain. The town is centered around the large complex of the Royal Palace and the Royal Gardens. It is clear why it was the inspiration for the classical guitar piece " Concierto de Aranjuez" by Joaquin Rodrigo. It is famous for its strawberries and asparagus. In 2001 Unesco listed the Aranjuez Cultural Landscape as a World Heritage Site.
Toledo, 30 minutes away from the lakes, is the capital of the autonomous community Castilla la Mancha. Toledo is known as the "Imperial City" for having been the main venue of the court of Charles I and as the city of "The Three Cultures" having been influenced by a historial co-existence of Christians, Muslims and Jews.
The province of Toledo offers the visitor a wide choice of possibilities, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. Hardly another town is so well conserved in it´s historical style. Overshadowing the city is the huge Gotic Cathedral, not far away another massive building the Alcazar. Toledo was the residence of el Greco and Garcilaso de la Vega.

It is the third largest city in the European Union after London and Paris.

You can spend some time in the most spectacular attraction park in Europe, the Warner Park, 15 minutes from the lakes.
